Nestled in the town of Val Trompia, in Northern Italy, lies a world where the finest craftsmen of sporting arms create wonders. The city is a treasure trove of unparalleled artistry in sporting arms. It’s a place where master engravers, with roots tracing back to the Renaissance, and skilled craftsmen, using traditional tools to carve wood into masterpieces, come together. It’s a place where every piece of metal is meticulously transformed into a precision work of art by dedicated artisans and factory workers.
In Italy, the tradition of firearms manufacturing is a noble one. Val Trompia and its resident gun makers primarily focus on crafting sporting firearms, destined for clay target shooting courses or for wing shooters seeking to bring home a bountiful harvest of pheasants for their family’s table. In Italy, these exquisitely designed, and expertly manufactured heirlooms are cherished and passed down through generations. One of the oldest privately held manufacturing firms in the world, Beretta, has been crafting firearms here for over 500 years, around the same time Leonardo Da Vinci was creating his timeless masterpieces.
To truly understand this tradition, I paid a visit to my dear friends, Giovanna and Barbara Fausti. My friendship with the Fausti sisters has spanned over 15 years and has evolved into a bond akin to family. They are an integral part of what drew me to this captivating country. Fausti is a family business with sisters, Giovanna, Barbara and Elena collaborating with their extensive production staff to create the finest shotguns in the world.
The firm, founded in 1948 by Stefano Fausti, has grown and evolved by consistently relying on its experience and tradition, following and applying its values, and pursuing the passion that has influenced decisions in the Fausti family since its inception.
A strong and cohesive team has been built and matured over the years, successfully facing the constant changes in the market and meeting the demanding needs of the shooting public and firearms connoisseurs throughout the world. Through teamwork and leveraging the strengths and talents of individuals in each department, from precision manufacturing in the machine shop, to the finishing department where manual work is flawlessly performed by a spectacular group of artisans, Fausti represents world class excellence at every turn. While the firm is deeply rooted in the traditions and values of the past, it is also progressive leader constantly striving for innovation.
Fausti has evolved, but what truly makes Italy enchanting is the fusion of “famiglia” with craftsmanship, business acumen, creative thinking, and a commitment to world-class manufacturing and vision. In 2009, with the birth of Fausti USA based in Fredericksburg, Virginia the company took a bold move to penetrate the U.S. marketplace. This represented an important element for the development of the Fausti commercial worldwide network recognizing the importance of this key market in global firearms sales.
The company has curated a unique collection of side-by-sides and over-under sporting shotguns, divided into two product lines: Core and Boutique. The Core line, the brand’s entry level, is distinguished by its design, functionality, and reliability. The Boutique line, on the other hand, is characterized by opulent finishes, exquisite engravings, and hand-selected fine wood stocks. I’ve had the privilege of touring the Fausti factory on multiple occasions. Yes, they boast incredible technology, and yes, they produce remarkable metal parts and firearm actions. However, to me, it’s the sight of a master engraver weaving a tale with their chisel, or a skilled woodworker meticulously crafting the stock of a nearly finished piece and fitting its metal receiver and barrel with unparalleled precision, or the artful hands of an artisan tenderly applying coat after coat of oil to bring out the magical grain of the wood, that truly captures the essence of Fausti. The manufacturing brilliance of this firm is undeniable, but it’s the craftsmanship that serves as a metaphor for the culture. Every firearm that leaves the doors of Fausti is treated with care and consideration. The staff here is truly remarkable, many with family legacies spanning generations. There’s an undeniable sense of pride when you speak to them and wander through the factory. They pause, eager to explain the task their hands are currently engaged in. There’s an unbridled passion for creating the very best, whether it’s a custom piece or one of their more mass-produced firearms. Each product offers a unique, personalized touchpoint.
The refined elegance of Fausti’s fine sporting arms evokes a bygone era of privilege and pleasure. Yet, the Fausti approach has made what was traditionally the domain of nobility accessible to all. For over a decade, I’ve been the proud owner of a custom-fitted 28 ga Fausti DEA side-by-side. Whether it’s gracefully wielded in the field alongside my Springer Spaniel or displayed as a timeless work of art, it’s a joy to behold.
