At NH Collection Palazzo Verona, past and present entwine to create a stay as lyrical as the opera itself.
Verona has always been a city where history and modern life meet in a delicate embrace. While much of Europe surges forward with glass towers and global chains, Verona holds fast to its past. Beyond Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers, this city is a living stage where ancient stones and quiet courtyards whisper their own dramas.
With just over 250,000 residents, Verona is hardly a metropolis, yet it lacks nothing. Its Duomo rises proudly among winding cobbled streets, while elegant piazzas open like sudden pauses in a symphony. Hidden gardens and fountains reward those willing to wander, their entrances marked only by half-open gates or the faint splash of water behind ivy-covered walls. Around every corner, a small table seems to be waiting for you—a place to pause with an aperitivo, or a glass of local Valpolicella as evening settles in.

A City Protected by its Past
The strict preservation laws that govern Verona’s historic centre make it impossible for towering hotel chains to dominate the skyline. And that is precisely the point. By keeping out the behemoths, the city leaves space for intimate boutique hotels that honour its heritage while offering comfort for modern travellers. One of the most compelling examples is the NH Collection Palazzo Verona.
Here, the old is not just preserved but lived in. The palazzo, built upon the foundations of a 14th-century medieval palace, has been transformed into a hotel where history is not behind glass but woven into every wall, stair, and courtyard. Guests aren’t simply visiting Verona—they are folded into its fabric.

Arrival at Midnight
We arrived long past midnight, the road from Milan having delivered a series of mishaps and delays. Yet the hour mattered little. The reception we encountered was not the weary sighs of a night shift but a genuine welcome: warm smiles, graceful gestures, an unhurried check-in that made our travel fatigue dissolve almost instantly.
The entrance itself was understated—so modest that you could almost pass it by without realizing the treasures within. And perhaps that is the magic: in Verona, grandeur rarely shouts; it lingers quietly, waiting for you to notice.
Sleeping Inside History
The next morning revealed more of the palazzo’s layered soul. The reception sits within what was once the palace courtyard, a sleek backlit desk juxtaposed against an 800-year-old wall. Corridors curve and twist in ways no modern blueprint would ever allow, leading to just 70 rooms. Each one is a private sanctuary where vaulted ceilings and frescoes frame plush linens, creating a dialogue between antiquity and modern luxury.

Descending the staircase to breakfast each day, we couldn’t help but feel transported. These steps, broad and cool, were designed in an era before efficiency, when architects sought atmosphere as much as function. We could almost hear the rustle of medieval gowns, the echoes of noble footsteps gliding toward banquets centuries before.
An Opera Within the Walls
Breakfast itself became an unexpected highlight. Tables brimmed with artisanal breads, fresh cheeses, seasonal fruits, and yes—even wellness touches like maca powder and superfoods for those who can’t leave their morning rituals behind. For international guests, a working samovar gleamed by the dessert table, while beautiful cappuccinos—served with effortless Italian perfection—set the tone for the day.
Around us, the walls spoke not of Hollywood icons but of Verona’s true legends: black-and-white portraits of Maria Callas and Luciano Pavarotti. Their commanding presence was a reminder that the city is home to one of the world’s great opera festivals. For over a century, the Arena di Verona has welcomed half a million visitors each summer. Night after night, its 15,000 seats fill with opera lovers from across the globe, drawn to the passion that only this ancient amphitheatre can conjure.
In the mornings, fellow guests appeared in relaxed linen, sipping juice or quietly mapping their day. By evening, the transformation was remarkable—silk gowns, tailored tuxedos, the quiet anticipation of a night at the opera. The hotel itself felt like the overture, preparing us for the crescendo to come.
Spaces That Breathe
Beyond the dining rooms, the winter garden offered refuge from Verona’s summer heat. Flooded with natural light beneath vaulted glass, it became our sanctuary for answering emails, making phone calls, or simply sitting with an espresso. Velvet chairs in shades of sapphire, playful vases shaped like lemons, fresco maps of the palazzo’s original blueprint—these details reminded us that design here is never an afterthought. Even the scent that lingered in the air felt intentional, following us from courtyard to corridor and guiding us home each evening after the opera.
Becoming Part of the Story
What stayed with us most was not simply the comfort, but the feeling of participation. At NH Collection Palazzo Verona, you are never just an observer—you are part of an unbroken chain of life within these walls. Where noble families once gathered, modern travellers now share stories over wine. Where courtyards once held ceremonies, guests now linger with laptops or novels. History breathes here, but it does not suffocate.
When it came time to leave, we realized the palazzo had orchestrated something profound: it had made us both audience and performers in Verona’s eternal opera. The same walls that sheltered medieval nobility now cradle today’s travellers before they venture to the Arena, ensuring that the music never stops.
